Furniture Revival Project

I am so excited to announce my new spring project! I received a go ahead from my principal, so the 2012 Furniture Revival Project is set to begin March 19, 2012.

The idea for the project is for each student is to spend up to $20 on their piece, but no more. With that money they are to obtain their piece of furniture and any supplies needed to refinish it. When they finish, the goal is to re-sell their item and make a profit. I am so excited to get started with these kids, and I feel so blessed to have principal that allows me to make a class out of it!

Of course we do face some challenges being a public school. Spending cash from a school district is virtually impossible, and unfortunately Craigslist and local yard sales don't usually accept purchase orders. So what I have done is make a poster and I am mailing all of the teachers in my school district to donate any wood furniture that they no longer need. I am so anxious to see what we can get!

Here is the poster that will be going out to the district.
What I hope to gain from this project is of course student achievement, but also a little bit more than that. I hope that the kids see that transformations can take place in many areas of our lives, not just our furniture. I want them to have a skill, and for some of them in such a low socioeconomic climate, I want them to see that by creating they can make a profit.

I know that art presents itself in many areas of our lives, and I want people to see a real value of it in the education of our children. Wish me luck on this new journey, and I will be updating more as the project begins.
